Our Teams
For the 2026/27 season we will be running an Under 16 team. For Under 18 players, we do not have the numbers to run a viable team. If you are an Under 18 player, please contact us as we can help with finding you appropriate teams as close as possible. We hope to field an Under 18 team next season.
Age Eligibility
To play for the Under 16s during the 2026-27 Season, you need to be 14 or 15 on 1st September 2026. If you turn 14 during this season you could play with the Under 16s once you turn 14, though only if your coaches think that you are ready. If you turn 16 during the season, you would normally continue to play at Under 16 level until the end of the season.
To play Under 18s during the 2026-27 Season, you need to be 16 or 17 on 1st September 2026. If you turn 16 during this season you could play with the Under 18s once you turn 16, though only if your coaches think that you are ready. If you turn 18 during the season, you would normally continue to play at Under 18 level until the end of the season.
Club Eligibility
You need to be a paid-up member of any rugby club aligned to the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU). Club membership gives you insurance, and pays for things like ground upkeep, floodlights and facilities at the grounds where we train and play. Borders Girls' Rugby is not a club in itself; it is a collaboration between clubs to improve development opportunities for girls in the Borders and North Northumberland. (Berwick RFC is aligned to both the SRU and the RFU.)
For SRU national competitions, we enter a single team at Under 16, so that we can play at 15-a-side levels. Girls will be primary registered on SCRUMS (the SRU Rugby Management System) with Kelso RFC and dual registered (if necessary) with their home club. This registration is because the SRU insist on there being a single “team of record” for competitions. Despite this, we are very much “Borders Girls”, as we support the development of girls’ rugby at all Borders clubs. This is why we ask that players pay their subs to their home club, if that is not Kelso RFC, and girls do not need to be a paid member of Kelso RFC.
Experience Eligibility
No experience is necessary. Anyone wanting to try rugby is very welcome to join, and no-one will be asked to play unless both the player and their coaches are wanting to progress to match-play. Come along to training and see how fun it can be. Message us beforehand if you need a loan of some boots, etc.
Although no experience is necessary, we cater for all experience levels. Many of our players have played for the region, several train with the regional academy on Tuesdays, and we are very proud of three of our players representing Scotland at Under 16 age grade.
